Perseu

Hero of Greek mythology, Perseus was the son of Zeus and the mortal Danae. Soon after his birth, his grandfather left it to the sea in a chest, with her mother, to die. Later, in order to remove the mother Perseus, Perseus Polydectes instructed dangerous mission: to bring the head of Medusa, the only mortal Gorgon.

Temeroso de ver cumprida a previsão de um oráculo, segundo a qual sua filha Dânae daria à luz aquele que lhe roubaria o trono e a vida, Acrísio, rei de Argos, enclausurou-a numa torre.

Zeus, sob a forma de uma chuva de ouro, introduziu-se na torre e engravidou Dânae, que gerou Perseu.

Herói da mitologia grega, Perseu era filho de Zeus com a mortal Dânae. Logo após seu nascimento, o avô abandonou-o ao mar numa arca, em companhia da mãe, para que morressem. A correnteza, porém, arrastou a arca até a ilha de Sérifo, reino de Polidectes, que se apaixonou por Dânae. Mais tarde, com o intuito de afastar Perseu da mãe, Polidectes encarregou Perseu de perigosa missão: trazer a cabeça da Medusa, a única Górgona mortal.

Com a ajuda de Atena, Hades e Hermes, que lhe emprestaram as armas e a armadura, Perseu venceu as Górgonas e, para evitar a visão da Medusa, que petrificava quem a fitasse, decapitou-a enquanto dormia, guiando-se por sua imagem refletida no escudo de Atena. Um oráculo informou a Cefeu que a única maneira de salvar o reino seria expor Andrômeda ao monstro, o que foi feito. Perseu, em sua viagem de volta a casa, viu a bela princesa e apaixonou-se por ela. Com a cabeça da Medusa, petrificou o monstro e libertou a jovem, com quem se casou.

De volta à Grécia com a esposa, após resgatar sua mãe do castelo de Polidectes, Perseu restabeleceu o avô Acrísio no trono de Argos mas, como predissera o oráculo, terminou por matá-lo, embora acidentalmente.

Ao sair de Argos, fundou Micenas, e tanto a Grécia como o Egito o honraram como herói.
